Top 3 Ways to Get Job Security

Since job security is now no longer “out there” and we need to create it...
how do we create job security?
It does bother me a little that we, as Headhunters, spend 90% of our day calling people who already have jobs to convince them to interview for our client’s job but
there is nothing that can be done about that. Companies need certain people to reach their own objectives and we find them.
Who are these people and why are they always so in demand despite the economic climate?
Well, that is what I have spent a considerable amount of time analyzing. I have observed several commonalities but here are the
top 3 reasons a select few are so in demand.
1. They have a career plan and never slip into the comfort zone. Ok, that’s sort of 2 things. It is easy to take a job, get comfortable and then just become content with a job well done. Sometimes people allow themselves to be completely consumed the task at hand. Those in high demand, never take their eye off the ball. The might be busy but they are constantly thinking about if what they are doing is in line with their career plan or career strategy. If it is not, they will *maneuver accordingly despite their, most likely, comfortable situation.
2. They have consistently worked on making themselves more marketable. They worse mistake someone can make in their career, besides accepting a counter-offer, is to take a job just because it pays more money and not because it will add to their skill set or *marketability. I’m not saying money isn’t important but don’t be penny wise and pound foolish…the REAL MONEY is in marketability! High marketability could be the difference between someone who gets offered 100k or 150k!!! Seriously, I have seen it! So to give up a few thousand dollars here or there to get you the jobs that will give you the marketability you desire is well worth it.
3. They have focused on building their network their whole career, not just when looking for a job. Building a network means not only taking the time to interact with people that are not in your immediate circle but it means building meaningful relationships with them. Remember the number one rule in networking (and life) … “give first, get later.” Giving with the attitude of no expectation just because you enjoy helping people will yield you the strongest network. This may come very natural to some people but once they enter a business situation they are all of a sudden out for themselves. That may lend to a nice short term sprint up the corporate ladder but I have seem more long term climbs up the corporate ladder from those that take a little more time to assist, advise and mentor others as well as connect people with other people in their network.
Job security is a journey and not a destination and there is much more to it than this but most of it does fall into these 3 categories.
You can create job security for yourself!
*marketability and *maneuver pertain to career strategies and there are different strategies depending on where you want your career path to take you.
Given the more people that meet the “in demand” criteria, the easier our job is as corporate Accounting Finance Headhunters, we at Dubin and Lee do free phone consultations for those interested in marketability and maneuver strategies in Corporate Accounting & Finance.
